Ulun Danu Beratan - The Floating Temple in Bali

IMG_4295-Edit.jpg

You've probably seen photos of this iconic water temple before, on Instagram or on the 50,000 Indonesian rupiah bill. Surrounded by the Bedugul mountains and located on the shores of Lake Beratan, it appears to be floating on water when the lake's water levels rise. Sounds beautiful, but was it worth the hype? (P.S. I went a little crazy in photoshop with the above image, see the original below)

How to get to Ulun Danu Beratan

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is located about 1.5 hours north of both Canggu and Ubud in the Bedugul region of Bali. The drive is fairly straightforward and manageable by scooter, albeit long. We wanted to break up the driving time, so we visited Jatiluwih Rice Terraces on the way here and highly recommend visiting those!

Cost of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Entrance Fee: 50k IDR for foreigners, 20k IDR for Indonesians

Parking Fee: 2k for motorbikes, 5k for cars

Boat Rentals: 35k/30min for a swan-shaped pedal boat, 75k/30min for a row boat, 150k for a speed boat

When to go to Ulun Danu Beratan

The temple is open from 5am until 7pm. We went in the middle of the afternoon which is the absolute worst time to go. You'll be constantly photobombed by tour groups and won't be able to fully enjoy the beauty of the temple. We'd recommend going for sunrise or before 8am if possible!

Our experience

Due to the massive crowds, we had a slightly disappointing experience here. We didn't go extremely early or take a boat out on the lake so we were constantly bumping into tourists. We also felt that the entrance fee was very expensive for what you get. Most of what you can see is what you see in the photos; you aren't able to enter the temple and the rest of the grounds are very small (we did find a cool set of archways which frame the beautiful mountains behind them). Still, the temple is surrounded by tons of natural beauty and we're glad we saw it once.

Don't let tourists crush your dreams of getting beautiful shots ;)
